Pilates is a physical training method created by a strong man, boxer and gymnast, Joseph Pilates almost 100 years ago.
His exercise system and philosophy was created as an intelligent movement experience to practice over time, and take in to your daily life.
A lot of imagery suggests Pilates is mostly done on a mat, however the real work and real change occurs using Joe’s apparatus. A genius physical training method working with resistance from springs, on varied pieces of equipment.
Elements of his own studies and training such as boxing, gymnastics, weight lifting, yoga, martial arts, circus training and more can be found in his work.
He selected the most effective parts of his experiences, to help develop his Pilates method known as Contrology.
Joseph Pilates was a visionary, way ahead of his time.
After he passed in 1967 he gave both his studio and work to his protégé Romana Kryzanouska.
Romana studied and taught side by side with Joe for decades and continued to teach the method after his death.
It is Romana’s Pilates that I studied and teach here at W Studio Pilates, thanks to my teacher, Cynthia Lochard.
